Short bio: from Psysex to Ace Ventura

Oshrat grew up in a musical family. His father is the composer of "Hallelujah", the song that won the Eurovision Song Contest for Israel in 1979. Before he made a name in psytrance, Yoni worked as a sound producer for TV and film.

In the late 1990s he started a project called Children of the Doc with Udi Sternberg, also known as Goblin. Sternberg folded it into his own project, Psysex, and the two made three albums together. In 2005 they went separate ways: Sternberg kept the Psysex name, and Oshrat went solo.

He first worked under the alias Schatsi, and in 2006 he started Ace Ventura, his progressive psytrance project. His debut album Rebirth came out on Iboga Records in September 2007, followed in 2008 by Re:Boot, a double album of remixes.

Sound: progressive psytrance with a full-on past

Ace Ventura is one of the defining names in progressive psytrance. His tracks sit on a tight, rolling bassline with a strong groove, and they leave room for space and atmosphere instead of nonstop leads. Beatport's bio describes his music as a mix of hard, dancefloor-driven tracks and deeper, groovier ones, and that range is what you hear in his sets.

Those sets are often long. He is known for open-to-close nights and three-hour festival slots that tell a story, starting deep and building up. He also makes downtempo and dub, for example with Vertical Mode on "Deep Breath". Labels: Iboga Records and Mutant Disco

For most of his solo career Ace Ventura has been an Iboga Records artist. The label released Rebirth, Re:Boot and Paradise Engineering, as well as many singles and collaborations. He has also put out music on HOMmega, Dragonfly, Future Music, Liquid Sound Design, Sacred Technology and Astrix's label Shamanic Tales.

In January 2025 he launched his own label, Mutant Disco Records. His recent singles come out there, among them "Maana" with Starlab, "Mindshift" with GMS, "Nova" with Protonica, "Spiritual Beings" with Asgard, a Volcano on Mars remix of "Pranava" with Astrix and a 2026 Faders and Blazy remix of "Rebirth".

With Liquid Soul he also co-founded Psy-Nation, a monthly radio show and podcast that doubles as a travelling party series.

Projects and collaborations

He works in a lot of joint projects. These are confirmed by his official bio and label pages:

  • Alpha Portal with Astrix. The two also made "Valley of Stevie" for Astrix's 2016 album He.art. Read our portrait of Astrix.
