Boom has existed since 1997 and takes place every two years. It is less a rave than a temporary town built around music, art and ecology: eight days of dance floors alongside workshops, talks, yoga, meditation, cinema and large art installations. Sustainability is a central theme. The crowd is international and includes long-time regulars, artists and families. The 2025 edition, the 15th, sold out at around 40,000 people; 2027 marks 30 years of Boom.

History

Born in 1997 from the vision of a small group of Portuguese friends, Boom Festival began as an intimate gathering of a few hundred people on the banks of the Idanha-a-Nova reservoir. Over two decades, it evolved into a landmark event on the global psychedelic culture calendar. The festival skipped editions during the global pandemic but returned in 2023 with renewed energy and an even deeper commitment to its founding values of sustainability, community, and transformational art. Each edition weaves together the latest in psychedelic music with ancient wisdom traditions, ecological activism, and visionary art installations that have become legendary in their own right.

Location

The festival takes place on rural, hilly land by a lake in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, Castelo Branco district, in central Portugal. Lisbon is the nearest major city, and Lisbon airport (LIS) is the usual gateway. Swimming in the lake is part of the day on site. In July, Portugal is in the middle of summer.

Stages

Boom's main stage, the Dance Temple, is a 24-hour psychedelic trance arena capable of hosting 15,000 dancers. The Sacred Fire stage hosts world music and ceremony. The Alchemy Circle features experimental electronic and live acts. The Liminal Village is dedicated to ambient, healing, and chill-out music. A dedicated Children's Boom area ensures the festival is family-friendly. Additional open-air stages and sound installations are scattered across the site.

Music

The music spans the whole psytrance spectrum: progressive, full-on, forest, darkpsy and goa. Beyond psytrance, the program covers psybient, chillout and downtempo, with world music and techno as well. Line-ups for 2027 are published on the official website and social channels.

Community

Boom draws an international crowd that camps on site for the full week. Children are allowed and there is a kids' area, so families mix with scene veterans. The site also has a healing area, a market and a psycare service for anyone who needs support. Artists are a visible part of the community, both on stage and across the site.

Art

Boom's visual landscape is as celebrated as its music. Monumental sculpted gateways, sacred-geometry light installations, interactive murals, fire-performance art, and immersive dream-temple environments are created by artists flown in from around the world. The Liminal Village and Healing Area host smaller-scale but equally profound works. The BoomShop showcases handmade crafts, visionary art prints, and sustainable clothing from the global psychedelic community.

Travel

Most international visitors fly into Lisbon (LIS) and continue by road. The organizers run a shuttle service; routes and booking are explained on the official tickets info page. A car gives you the most flexibility, though the trip takes some planning. Camping is included with the festival ticket.

Accommodation

The festival site is fully camping-based. Options include general camping (included with ticket), Car Camping (vehicles parked adjacent to tent), Campervan Village, and upgraded Glam Camping packages with furnished bell tents and catering. Shade is scarce in August so a good tent and sun protection are essential. Nearby villages offer limited B&B and self-catering accommodation for those preferring to commute daily.
