Esoteric Festival: psytrance bush festival in Donald, Victoria
A five-day psytrance and arts festival on rural land near Donald, Victoria. Last held in March 2024; the 2025 edition was cancelled and no new edition has been announced.
Esoteric was one of Victoria's bigger bush festivals: five days over the Labour Day long weekend, seven stages, psytrance at the core, with workshops, yoga, talks and a healing area around it. Around 7,000 people were expected for 2025. Honestly, the setting is what would have drawn me: family land where the co-founder's family planted the forest and have since added more than 10,000 trees.
Location
The site lies near Donald in rural Victoria, about three to four hours' drive north-west of Melbourne. Forest, open-air floors and a swimmable lagoon: a waist-deep pond with a daytime stage right beside it. Mid-March is early autumn in Australia. A dance floor next to water you can actually stand in is something I'd trade a lot of European festival comforts for.

Music
The main psytrance stage was the Sun Temple; heavier psy had its own sunset-facing Ascension Stage. Around that: progressive, full-on, techno, house and chillout. From everything I've read, this wasn't a purist event but a psy festival with open side rooms, which for this crowd makes sense to me.
Community
The crowd mixed locals, campers, festival veterans and families; kids were allowed and there was a kids' area. With a market, a cinema and art installations, it read more like a small town for five days than a rave. What's left for now: an unofficial "tribute gathering" near Lake Wooroonook in March 2026, and Celestial Grove, described as a successor event, near Geelong at Easter 2025.
Travel
If Esoteric returns, plan on driving: the site is three to four hours north-west of Melbourne, and the nearest major airport is Melbourne (MEL). Past editions offered a shuttle, and car camping and campervans were part of the setup. From abroad, that's a long trip for a festival with no date, so don't book anything before an official announcement.
Tickets
There is no current ticket sale. After the cancelled edition, the organizing company went into voluntary administration in June 2025, and no 2026 or 2027 edition has been announced. If Esoteric comes back, I'd only buy through channels the festival itself confirms.
