Vortex Open Source: psytrance camping festival near Ladismith
A three-day psytrance camping festival in the Klein Karoo near Ladismith, run by Vortex Trance Adventures. The next edition takes place on 18–20 December 2026.
Vortex Trance Adventures has been running outdoor trance events in South Africa since 1994, and Open Source is its December festival: three days, camping included. Three decades is a long time in this scene, and for me that is the strongest argument for going. A crew that has lasted this long knows how to run a party far from town. The 2019 edition, the 25th anniversary, drew about 7,000 campers. That is a fraction of the big European names, and from everything I read the crowd is mostly locals and long-time regulars. If you want a festival with roots rather than a brand, this looks like one.
Location
Open Source is now held at Karoo 62, a private reserve in the semi-desert Klein Karoo near Ladismith, Western Cape, about four hours by road from Cape Town. That is a change: the festival used to take place at a riverside site near Riviersonderend, and the 2019 figures come from there. December is midsummer in South Africa, and semi-desert means planning for sun and shade, not a green forest floor. Honestly, the location is the trade-off here: dramatic and remote, but no quick hop from the airport. The same reserve hosts Vortex's winter festival, Phoenix Festival of Fire, in June.

Music
The core is psytrance in its full-on and progressive forms, with chillout as the counterweight. In 2019 there were three dance floors: full-on, progressive/tech and chill. That floor plan comes from the old site, so check the current one. What I like about the mix is its focus. No promise of every subgenre, just a clear full-on and progressive core and somewhere to slow down. Give it a long night on a Karoo floor and the music does the work.
Community
Locals, campers and veterans: that is the crowd profile, and it fits an organiser with a thirty-year track record. If you travel from Europe or Brazil, expect a South African crowd first rather than an international circus. For me that is a plus, because you get the local scene as it is. Vortex runs other events through the year too, including Phoenix in June and, earlier, Parallel Universe at Easter, and it co-presents Little Forest Festival over New Year's Eve.
Travel
Plan for a road trip. Cape Town International (CPT) is the nearest major airport, and from Cape Town it is about four hours to Karoo 62 near Ladismith. A car is the realistic option; I couldn't find a confirmed shuttle, so don't count on one. My advice: pick up the car in Cape Town, try to arrive in daylight, and pack enough water and shade for three days of camping in the semi-desert summer.
Tickets
I couldn't verify current prices or a direct ticket link for 2026, so start at the official website, vortextranceadventures.co.za, and the Vortex Instagram and Facebook pages. Camping is part of the ticket. Without a confirmed price I won't quote one; check the official channels before you book flights to Cape Town.
