Earthdance Cape Town: camping dance festival near Riviersonderend

Riviersonderend, South Africa Est. 1997

A three-day, 18+ camping festival at Kromrivier Farm near Riviersonderend, part of the global Earthdance network. The 2026 edition ran 18–20 September; 2027 dates are not announced yet.

Full-OnProgressive PsytranceChill-Out

Earthdance Cape Town belongs to the worldwide Earthdance network, and its signature moment is simple: at 01:00 on the Sunday a Prayer for Peace is read, in sync with other Earthdance gatherings around the world. You can find that earnest or moving; I lean towards moving, because it gives the weekend a point beyond the party. Music, a long night and people around you: that's all it takes. The Cape Town edition was already marking its 22nd year in 2018, which makes it one of the city's oldest outdoor dance gatherings.

Location

The festival takes place at Kromrivier Farm, with a camping field under the mountains near Riviersonderend in the Western Cape. Cape Town is the nearest city. September is spring in South Africa, so this is an early-season weekend, well before the December summer festivals. What I like about the setting is that it sounds like a proper farm weekend rather than an industrial festival ground. If you don't want to pitch your own tent, glamping is offered too.

Music

Earthdance frames itself broadly as music and movement, but the 2025 line-up told a clearer story: almost entirely Cape Town psytrance acts. There is no official genre list, so take full-on and progressive with chillout as the likely pattern, not a promise. Two stages carry it. Sonic Horizon runs full-spectrum through the night; Mellow Meadow is the slower, deeper floor. For me that setup is honest: it doesn't pretend to be Boom, it gives you a main floor and a place to breathe.

Community

This is a local crowd: Capetonians and campers, all 18 or over, no children. Alongside the music there are workshops and a market, which suits the Earthdance idea of a gathering rather than just a rave. If you come from abroad, I'd see it as a way into the Cape Town scene. A line-up of local DJs means you hear the city's own sound, not the touring circuit you can catch anywhere.

Travel

Riviersonderend is in the Western Cape, and Cape Town International (CPT) is the nearest major airport. A car is recommended; I found no confirmed shuttle, so plan your own transport or arrange a lift with other festival-goers. The camping field is on the farm, so you arrive once and stay put for the three days.
